“As Iron Sharpens Iron So Does One Man Sharpen Another”

WHO KNEw?

What began as a casual conversation at church between Ret. Lt. Col. Clay Edens (then overseeing Beech Grove High School JROTC) and Matt Gleaves sparked a simple idea with a big impact! Matt suggested using Maddox Industrial Group’s Confined Space Rescue (CSR) training tower in Indianapolis for rappelling and safety drills for a basic introduction into CSR.

On June 18, 2022, after two years of COVID-related pauses in extended JROTC activities, MIG opened its CSR training tower for rappelling and safety drills.

The pilot day was safe, challenging, confidence-building, and fun SUCCESS! Word spread, participation grew, and the event became an annual tradition, expanding to include more Indianapolis-area JROTC programs, partner companies, and S.W.A.T with the goal of introducing cadets to real-world leadership, teamwork, industrial safety, and career pathways beyond high school.

Who Knew this would become a training tradition focused on leadership, teamwork, and real-world industrial safety.

The Three E’s of JROTC

When a student joins the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, they’re not just signing up for another elective… they’re stepping into a program that builds discipline, leadership, and character.

JROTC equips young men and women with life skills that extend far beyond the classroom: teamwork, responsibility, physical fitness, and respect for self and others. These are traits that prepare them for success in college, career, and community service alike.

Enlist:

For those who choose, JROTC provides a pathway to enlistment with advanced rank, specialized training, and a strong foundation of discipline already in place. This isn’t about obligation… it’s about opportunity, opening doors for those who want to serve.

Enroll:

Every cadet in JROTC gains exposure to leadership training, citizenship education, and practical skills that make them more confident and capable. Enrolling in college or extended education means investing in yourself and your future.

EnTER:

Another option that JROTC cadets are encouraged to do is ENTER the workforce. College is not for everyone! JROTC instills a sense of purpose, adaptability, and resilience that ensures they enter the next stage of life with confidence and a competitive edge.
